If you care enough, call. We care enough to come over.
Over the months of October, November and December – Embark rescued and attended to the treatment of more than 150 injured or sick stray animals. Once recovered, hospitalised animals were vaccinated against rabies, sterilised and released in to their own familiar territory. The team also attempted to re-home some of the dogs with disabilities who would have been unable to survive on the streets.

Jupiter

Jupiter was rescued from the roadside in Biyagama after being hit by a fast moving vehicle which didn't even stop for a second to see his plight. He had crawled away from the road dragging his paralysed back legs and collapsed in a heap on the pavement - where he was found by a kind gentleman who called Embark. Embark’s emergency rescue team were able to respond within a few hours and brought Jupiter to a veterinary clinic where he was admitted for treatment.

Recovering from multiple fractures and almost complete paralysis of his hind limbs – Jupiter never gave up and neither did Embark. After more than a month of treatment, physiotherapy and care, Jupiter began to regain the use of his back legs and was able to stand and relieve himself without getting dirty. Shuffling or walking unsteadily, Jupiter greeted whoever walked into the clinic with a friendly tail wag and a bark.

After Jupiter’s condition improved and he continued to recover, the next step was for him to go back to his own territory. However, being on the older side and partially disabled – Jupiter and other accident victims or disabled dogs like him cannot go back onto the streets.

The Embark team was overjoyed when Simon, an ardent animal lover came forward to take Jupiter in after seeing Embark’s appeal to re-home a special needs dog. In September, Jupiter finally went to his new home - a sprawling farm in Udawalawe, where he could enjoy the rest of his days. Simon, who took Jupiter in has already started working with him towards further improving his mobility!

Jupiter’s story is a testament to the unbreakable will of our canine companions, and a tribute to those who have given of their time and money to care for other disabled or special needs dogs like Jupiter.

The Saving the Injured Campaign is yet another very important and challenging project undertaken by Embark. Since an essential part of Embark's mission is to care for all animals in need, the Embark team actively assists in the rescue of a number of cases of seriously injured stray animals. When a call comes in on the Embark Hotline alerting of a situation involving an injured animal, the team proceeds to take action by searching, rescuing and treating the animal in need.

The rescue of Suddhi (Read more), the three-legged dog (story elsewhere on this page), is a fantastic example of providing loving care and another chance at survival.

An important aspect of this campaign is after care. The trauma of injuries could permanently scar an animal not only physically but also mentally. Individual attention is given to the animals in the hope that it will ease their distress and further improve their chances of recovery.

In keeping with Embark's dream to provide stray animals with a loving home, the animals rescued and treated through 'Saving the Injured Campaign' are given high priority when re-homing. As they require constant, attentive care, the Embark team ensures that any potential owners are well aware of each rescued animal's special needs resulting from its injuries.

All animals have rights - The right to enjoy the freedom of life without being subject to cruelty inflicted by humans. By taking care of animals in our environment, we are also caring for ourselves. Embark wants to share this experience with you. Let us make our surroundings a better place for both people and animals.

All animals have the right to:
- Freedom from Hunger and Thirst
- Freedom from Discomfort
- Freedom from Pain, Injury & Disease
- Freedom from Fear & Distress
- Freedom to Express Natural Behavior

We do what we do to improve the lives of the helpless stray dog population in our country.
